家族というのは基本的に「会食する集団」でしょう。デートというのも基本的に「いっしょにごはんを食べに行くこと」ですよね。どうしていっしょにごはんを食べるのかって言えば、ごはんを食べているときに、美味しいかどうかで、その人といて楽しいか楽しくないかが分かるからですよ。家族でごはんを食べるのは仲がいいから食べるんじゃない。その逆です。「いつごはんがまずくなるか」をチェックするために、いっしょにごはんを食べる。ぼくはそう思っているんです。

ごはんを食べていてまずくなったら、それは家族の危険信号なんです。だいたいテレビドラマでも、家族の間に亀裂が入ると言うときは、ちゃぶ台をひっくりかえすか、作ってくれたものを残して「もう、いらない」と席を立つ場面ですからね。

セックスするまでもなく、男と女はいっしょにごはんを食べるだけで、いっしょに居られる人かどうかはわかるんです。うまくゆかない相手とだと、ごはんの味がしないから。「味がしない」というのは、「この人といっしょにいても、あなたの心身のパフォーマンスは上がらないです」って身体がシグナルを送ってきているわけですから。いくら頭が「いっしょにいるほうがいい」というメッセージを送っても、消化器の方が「いやだ」って言っている。だから、食事の時にたわないことをしゃべっていても、やたら食が進んで、「おかわり」と言える時は、身体が「この人とは相性がいいよ」って教えてくれているんです。（P.57)
